Pay Attention to High Energy Bills

It’s been a rough week, and the last thing you wanted to see was a spike in your energy bill. Pulling out your wallet, you hope that this is a fluke and not some kind of trend that’s going to cost you down the line.

We all understand this perspective. High energy bills can surprise us, and there’s no option to not pay them, so they can throw a wrench into our budget plans. That vacation can be pushed out another month from one inefficient energy bill.

Well, we’re here to help you examine your energy bills and take note of any trends or a problem that’s in need of repairs. It’s the responsibility of an HVAC company in Orlando, FL to help homeowners with their energy efficiency and ensure their heating and cooling systems aren’t wasting money. Let’s try and figure out if there’s any room for improvement on your energy bill.

What Does Your Bill Say?

Before we get into the advice we might have as your local HVAC expert, we need to examine your bills. Don’t just look at this month’s high energy bill, take a look at the previous month’s energy bills as well. In fact, if you have old paper bills from previous years, or even an account online where you can view your past years’ paid energy bills, then we highly advise you do so. The more information you have to compare, the better your analysis will be going forward.

Here are our tips for examining what your bills have to say:

  • Trends for this year. If you’re noticing that your energy bills spike during the summer and then fall dramatically during the winter, then you’ve likely got a bad problem with your air conditioner that needs fixing.
  • Trends over the years. If you’re seeing a steady increase in energy consumption over the years, then your AC might need maintenance or it might need to be replaced by a newer system.
  • An energy breakdown. Try and break down the energy use of your appliances. Are there seasons that you use certain appliances more than others? If so, weigh those factors into your energy report and see if you can curb your energy consumption through practices.

What Can You Do About High Energy Bills?

There are a few things that homeowners can do about high energy bills. For starters, they can try to use best practices to decrease energy consumption elsewhere. Perhaps leaving the TV on all night might be a bad idea and waste energy. Or instead, you can run the fan when your air conditioner is making the house a little too chilly. Here are a few extra tips:

Change Your Air Filter

Your air conditioner or heater’s air filter can get clogged up with heavy use. Changing out the air filter can help increase airflow and allow for maximum energy efficiency in your system. The more gunk that’s clogging up the air filter, the less efficiently the system will run.
