Top Tips for Avoiding Heating Repair Needs This Winter

HVAC-technician-working-on-a-heating-system

Of course, we’re happy to provide heater repair whenever it is needed. In fact, we have emergency technicians on-call seven days a week to make sure that no emergency is overlooked, and all of our neighbors are able to keep the heat on during the winter.

But we also believe it’s nicer for our customers to avoid having those heating problems as much as possible! So we’ve got some helpful information for you. Here are our top tips for keeping your heating system happy. Follow these, and you’ll be much less likely to need heating repairs this winter.

Prioritize Maintenance

There are two aspects of heating system maintenance, and neither one should be neglected. First, there’s annual maintenance, which is provided by a qualified technician. And second, there’s the maintenance you can do yourself throughout the winter.

  • Annual Maintenance: Book an appointment to have a professional heating system tune-up. This involves cleaning, lubricating, inspecting, and testing all the components of the system. It boosts efficiency and effectiveness, ensures your safety, and reduces the risk that you’ll need heating repairs during the coming year by a whopping 85%!
  • DIY Maintenance: The one thing you should be doing all winter on your own is changing the heating system’s air filter. Reusable filters should be washed and dried. Disposable filters can be discarded and replaced with new ones. Do this every month—a little more often if you have a lot of dust or heavily-shedding pets—and your heating system will experience much less strain and require fewer repairs.

Minimize Use

Of course, you will need to use your heating system during the winter! But if you can take a little of the pressure off by using it a little less, it will accumulate less wear and tear and be less likely to require repairs. And that’s not the only benefit! Decreasing your heating system use will lower your utility bills and help your heating system keep running for more winters overall. Here’s how to do it.

  • Use Your Ceiling Fans: Don’t let that hot air hang out near the ceiling! You’re not sitting up there enjoying it. Set your ceiling fans to turn clockwise to keep that warmth moving downward to where you need it.
  • Take Advantage of Solar Gain: Don’t block the sun when it’s hitting your windows. Soak up that sunlight and enjoy the greenhouse effect!
  • Upgrade Your Thermostat: If you’re using an old thermostat, you’re probably using your heat more than you need to. A modern smart thermostat can help you maximize efficiency and avoid waste.

And finally, if you do need heating system repair, have it done as promptly as possible! Delays, and running a heating system while it’s struggling, will lead to more complicated (and more costly) repairs in the long run. So whether you need routine maintenance, have a question about changing air filters, or have an emergency that requires heating repair in Oviedo, FL, we’re at your service.
