Trouble Shooting a Central Air Conditioning Unit
When the summer heat is at full force, your central air conditioning unit provides an oasis like retreat. Waking up one morning to find the heat inside your home keeping pace with the scorching temperatures outdoors is any homeowner’s worst summer nightmare. Even if you have no technical skills for air conditioning repair, there are a few simple things you can check out on your own before you call in a costly professional. Trouble shooting your own central air problem can give you the peace of mind of shopping around for repair quotes before committing to one service provider to come to your home.
The first thing you should do when trouble shooting your home’s central air conditioning system is to make certain that your temperature is set lower than the actual room temperature. Your thermometer must be set lower than the room temperature to kick the system on.
If the temperature is set correctly, then move the switch on your thermostat from the auto position to on. This will allow you to see if the blower is the culprit of your lack of cool air. If the blower comes on, then you can assume that your problem is coming from the cooling system. If the fan does not engage when you switch the setting, then you should check your circuit breaker panel and see if you have a blown fuse. If your system runs central heat and air together, look at your furnace and see if the emergency switch is on. If it is in the on position, or if your fuses are continually blowing, then it is probably time to call a repairman.
If the blower is operating properly, then set your fan to auto and your selector to cool. Turn the temperature way below the room temperature. For example, if your room temperature is 75, set it to 55 or 60. When you do this the blower will engage, and you should step outside and look at the compressor unit. If the compressor is not running, then look for a button sticking out by the cooling lines. If it is sticking out, push it in as far as it will go to reset the unit.
If both units seem to be in proper order but you do not have any cool air coming out, check the copper pipes that come out of the condenser cabinet outside. If they are warm then you have a Freon issue, and will need to call a service person. If they are covered in ice, then turn your system off and allow them to dethaw. Check and make sure that you intake vent inside is not covered, and that all of your air vents are open. If the icing repeats when you turn the system back on, then you need to call for help.
Because the number of electrical components involved in a central air conditioning system, it is important not to attempt any repairs on your own. Once you have an idea of your problem, find a licensed repair and service company to do the work.
