Central Air Conditioner Freeze Ups

Having your air conditioner suddenly stop blowing cold air in the middle of the summer heat is a situation no homeowner wants to deal with. If your air conditioner lines are freezing over, there are several possible reasons to blame. Air conditioners have refrigerants that chill the air as it comes from the fan. The central air conditioning system is designed to prevent a freeze up from occurring.

One of the most common causes of air conditioner freeze up is insufficient airflow. Insufficient airflow prevents the movement of air across the cooling coil, allowing it to drop to a below freezing temperature. This typically caused by dirty and clogged filters. Locate the filters in your house and replace or clean them.   If the problem persists, it is possible that the air ducts are too small. Improperly sized air ducts limit the amount of air that can flow over the cooling coil.  When this happens moisture builds on the coil and freezes.

The charge of your refrigerant is a difficult problem to troubleshoot on your own. There is a very delicate balance that must be properly maintained for the central air conditioning system to operate, as it should. If the air conditioning system is not properly balanced due to the refrigerant charge you will need a certified service technician to test the charge and make the repairs.

The outside temperature can also adversely affect your central air conditioning unit. When night time temperatures drop below sixty degree Fahrenheit the system will not properly function, often causing freeze ups. There is an ambient temperature control that you can purchase and install that enables the unit to operate in  these lower temperatures. Alternatively, you can turn your air conditioner thermostat to off, and open the windows to cool your house.

When people see that their air conditioner copper pipes are covered in ice, it is understandable that they would assume rapidly dethawing them would fix the issue. It is important to be patient and turn off your central air conditioning system and allow the outdoor temperatures to cool the lines instead of trying to heat them to speed dethawing up. Rapid dethawing can cause the pipes to crack. Cracked copper pipes will only add to the cost of repairs.

Any time your central air conditioning system is freezing up it is best to simply try letting the lines dethaw before you call for help. If the freezing occurs more than once, call a licensed professional heating and air conditioning specialist to properly diagnose the problem and make any repairs that are required.

Having your system on a professional maintenance schedule is well worth the cost.  During the summer months air conditioning repair businesses are often overwhelmed with urgent requests. Having your system inspected prior to the high summer heat will ensure that you do not have to spend days without air conditioning waiting for help.
