Choosing Between a Window Air Conditioning Unit or Central Air Conditioning System
An air conditioner is designed to cool and dehumidify the air in your home. Often homeowners of older model homes will have to decide between installing window air conditioning units or a central air conditioning system. Cost is a major factor in choosing which type of air conditioner you will ultimately purchase, but cost aside there are several other major differences between the two to consider.
Window air conditioner units are meant to be installed in a window frame. There are also models designed to be installed in a wall. Both types of units plug into a standard electrical outlet and require no professional wiring. These small units are designed to cool only a single room, so if you need to cool your whole house you will need to take size and number of rooms that need to be cooled into consideration. It is very important that you find exactly the right sized air conditioning unit for the size of room you wish to cool. Too small of a window air conditioning unit will not be able to cool the room, but rather force the unit to run for prolonged periods of time. This prolonged running will only increase your electric bill without keeping you cool. One might be tempted to purchase a unit larger than is needed for the size of the room. Resist the temptation, because a unit that is designed for a larger space will leave humidity in the air, making you cold and clammy instead of dry and cool.
While a central air conditioning system may be a more costly choice, the benefits over a window air conditioning unit are many. A central air conditioning system has a condenser that is typically located outdoors. A fan and cooling coil system take outside air and cool it before pushing it through air ducts that vent into each room. Often these systems work in along with a forced air furnace. Because these types of systems control the temperature in all rooms, they tend to be more efficient and use less energy than multiple window units will require.
Both window air conditioning units and central air conditioning systems measure the power in British thermal units. The smallest of window air conditioner units will usually rate at 5,000 BTUs, and the largest are typically around 20,000 BTUs. A 5,000 BTU window air conditioning unit will generally sufficiently cool 150 square feet, while a 20,000 BTU unit will cool about 1,100 square feet.
A single window air conditioning unit will cost a few hundred dollars depending on BTUs. These types of units can safely be installed by a homeowner, thus eliminating the installation costs that come with purchasing a central air conditioning system. If your current forced air heater has proper ductwork, it is possible to have a central air conditioning system piped into the current ducts. If this is possible, an average sized central air conditioning system with installation will run a few thousand dollars. If the ductwork is in need of repair or none exists, the costs can double or triple.
